2023 U.S. Lightning Activity: A First Look

Did you know the number of lightning flashes in the U.S. grew by more than 6% from 2022 to 2023? Even so, not all areas were impacted the same.

Drawing on AEM’s brand new 2023 U.S. Lightning Report, we’ll walk you through the latest statistics and explain the varying impact across states and counties.

We’ll answer these questions and more:
  • Which states and counties had the most concentrated lightning activity per square mile?
  • Which areas faced lightning risks most frequently?
  • Which areas experienced the largest numbers of high-intensity thunderstorms?
  • How does 2023’s lightning activity compare to the climatological trend?
